You are a professional. This class is all about continuing your ‘process of becoming’ a teacher. This pass/fail class is designed as such so that it is a safe learning space to discuss openly, challenge your own beliefs and assumptions, take risks, explore engaging teaching approaches, and learn with and from your colleagues as you work hard together in your staff groups. The way you approach this class will be a reflection of how you will approach your future professional development as the ‘process of becoming’ a teacher is never-ending.
View the TeacherTube video 212 Degrees and think about how you are going to show your commitment, passion and professionalism throughout this class. We look forward to being with you on this journey!
Exploring FOUR COMMONPLACES:
1. Teachers: Who are you as learner and as teacher?
Who Are You as a Learner?
Explore to find out your learning strengths and preferences:
Take a MI Test – excellent interactive site that will lead you through questions and then it creates a circular representation of your Multiple Intelligences. Please print your diagram and bring to class.
Create your own MI Snowflake – an interactive site which allows you to create and print out your own snowflake as part of learning about your Multiple Intelligences – from thirteen.org
Surfaquarium Multiple Intelligence Survey An excellent survey that you could use with your students if you want to use a hard copy as it is not interactive. Browse through the Surfaquarium MI Page for other info and resources.
Now you have a sense of your areas of strength, please check out the following sites and gather information and jot down your notes and thoughts about what you are learning about yourself “as learner”.

What It Means to Be An Effective Teacher
Questions to Consider (from ASCD Qualities of Effective Teachers Study Guide)
- Consider the best teacher you’ve ever know-either one of your teachers or a teacher you have observed. What made that teacher so memorable? In what way has that teacher been influential in your life?
- What are specific characteristics and behaviors that you can associate with that effective teacher?
- Think of the kind of teacher you think you will be and compare your performance with the effective teacher you identified. What are the similarities? What are the differences?
- What makes a teacher of students placed at risk particularly effective? What makes a teacher of students with high abilities particularly effective?
